There is some variation between provinces and territories regarding the legal drinking age in Canada. This can confuse travelers, especially when visiting cities like Montreal, where the drinking age is lower than in other parts of Canada.

Montreal, located in the province of Quebec, has a legal drinking age of 18. 18 years old is lower than most other Canadian provinces and territories, which have set their legal drinking age to 19. 

The primary reason the drinking age is different in Quebec vs other provinces is cultural. Quebec has long had a more relaxed attitude toward alcohol consumption all around. 

A few years ago, Quebec’s Junior Health Minister suggested the drinking age change to 21, but the Premier declined.

In most Canadian provinces and territories, the legal drinking age is 19 years old, including British Columbia, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Prince Edward Island, and Yukon. 

There are three exceptions to this rule: 

  1. Quebec: Quebec has a legal drinking age of 18, making Montreal an attractive destination for younger travelers who want to enjoy the city’s vibrant nightlife and bar scene. 
  1. Alberta: Similar to Quebec, Alberta also has a legal drinking age of 18 years old due to the province’s unique cultural influences and proximity to Quebec. 
  1. Manitoba: You only need to be 18 years old to drink in Manitoba as well.

The Difference Between Montreal And The U.S. Legal Drinking Ages

You might think since the United States shares a border with Canada, they would have a similar drinking age, but this isn’t the case.

The legal drinking age in the US was established at 21 years old by the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 in an effort to encourage a more responsible approach to alcohol consumption among young adults. 

Since the federal drinking age in the USA is 21 years old across the entire country, American travelers are often surprised to find out they can buy alcohol in Montreal at 18. 

No wonder my friends in New York would visit Montreal so often during college! And now, they complain about having so many 18-year-olds in Canadian bars, something they don’t see back home.

Legal Consequences For Breaking The Montreal Drinking Laws

Montreal is famous for its vibrant nightlife, unique culture, and relatively low legal drinking age of 18 years old. 

While this relaxed attitude towards drinking can make the city an exciting destination for younger visitors, remember that breaking the drinking laws in Canada is considered a serious legal offense. 

If caught drinking under age, you will likely receive a fine.

It used to be required by law that customers consume food at restaurants if they’re drinking alcohol, but that law no longer exists.

Driving Under The Influence (DUI) In Montreal

Driving drunk is one of the leading causes of car accidents in Quebec.

Drinking and driving is strictly prohibited in Montreal, and the legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit is 0.08% for experienced drivers and 0.00% for novice drivers (i.e. those with a learner’s permit or probationary license). 

There is a zero-tolerance policy (0.00%) for drivers 21 years old and younger.
