Is It Safe To Drink Tap Water In Toronto? (2024 Guide)

Visiting a new city or country can be overwhelming, and one of my top concerns when traveling is staying healthy because nothing ruins a trip more than spending it sick in bed!

Unfortunately, drinking water is one of the quickest ways to become sick when traveling.

I grew up in Toronto, so I have used the water there and in other parts of Canada all my life!

So let’s jump in and look at everything you need to know about the water in Toronto to help you have a safe trip!

Is It Safe To Drink Tap Water In Toronto?

Yes, Toronto tap water is perfectly safe to drink!

Not only is it some of the cleanest water in Canada, but it is easy to access around the city.

From public fountains to kitchen sinks, you will find high-quality tap water in Toronto.

City officials constantly test Toronto’s water supply and treat it according to the Safe Drinking Water Act. With the treatment plants operating 24/7 and accredited labs testing water samples every 6 hours, they really do take it seriously!

However, you do need to watch out for old pipes in certain places.

Old pipes can make the water quality poor and the water from the taps unpleasant to drink because they can leak chemicals like lead and copper into the tap water. These pipes are also more at risk of bacteria build-up, which can make you sick.

You will find older pipes in most buildings built before 1950,  but if you stay in a new apartment or hotel, you will have no issues!

How Clean Is Toronto Tap Water?

Toronto tap water is extremely clean, thanks to the professional treatment system. No matter where you are in the Toronto area, you can easily find safe drinking water.

The city also invests heavily in maintaining and upgrading its water system.

All tap water is filtered 3 times to remove any debris and additional impurities. This makes sure that the water coming through your tap is as clean as possible.

They also add chlorine to destroy any other bacteria found in the water. This step kills all microorganisms and germs like E. coli before coming through your tap.

But don’t worry! The chlorine level added to your water is perfectly safe for human consumption!

And just like most water systems around the world, Fluoride is added to prevent tooth decay. Again, the amount of Fluoride added to the water system is perfectly safe and is tested regularly in labs.

However, If you ever drink tap water that looks unclean or has an odor, it is usually due to dirty or old pipes.

The best way to check this is to run your tap for 30 seconds to ensure your water is clear. If the water is still unclean, contact your water supplier or hotel reception. This rarely happens with Canadian tap water as the city invests heavily in upgrading its water system.

Where Does Toronto Tap Water Come From?

Toronto’s drinking water comes from Lake Ontario, 125 km from the city. Millions of liters are moved through pipes below the lake to the treatment plants daily.

Lake Ontario is a great place to visit in Canada, and I highly recommend doing a kayak tour there!

Then, they treat the raw water from Lake Ontario to remove contaminants, such as bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms. It then goes through different stages of filtration before being chlorinated for disinfection.

This process ensures that the tap water in Toronto is 100% safe and clean for drinking and other uses.

The city then treats Toronto’s tap water at four primary treatment plants. These are F.J. Horgan Water Treatment Plant, Island Water Treatment Plant, R.C. Harris Water Treatment Plant, and  R.L. Clark.

Toronto is split into different pressure zones and districts to ensure there is enough water pressure and availability to supply the whole city, according to demand.

Toronto and Canada are considered water-rich, meaning it’s very accessible. This accessibility also allows the city to store water in tanks and reservoirs in the case of emergencies like wildfire or drought.

So no matter where you stay or when you go to Toronto, you’ll have plenty of clean water!

Is Toronto Water Hard Or Soft?

Water hardness varies throughout Canada, and Toronto falls into the “moderately hard to hard” category. Hard water means it has a high mineral content, such as calcium and magnesium.

While hard water is not hazardous to human health, it can have harsh and unpleasant effects on your hair and skin. It also can impact your household appliances and general plumbing.

If you’re looking for softer water in Toronto, options are available. You can buy water softeners and filters that help remove the minerals in hard water and make it easier on your hair, skin, and clothing.

Or you can buy a filtering water bottle that will improve the taste and quality of the tap water (this is what I do when living in Ontario).

Is Tap Water Safe To Drink In Canada? (Other Provinces)

If you are wondering, “Is it safe to drink tap water in Ontario?” or any other part of Canada, the answer is yes!

The Canadian government has set strict standards regarding the safety of drinking water and regularly monitors public sources for contaminants such as viruses, bacteria, metals, chemicals, and other pollutants.

The government also requires all municipal water systems to provide regular reports on their water quality. This means that the officials can closely monitor the water quality throughout the country and solve any issues quickly.

And If there are any concerns about the water, the local water advisories will notify the public immediately.

However, the only real difference between the Canadian Provinces is the level of hardness in their water. Hardness does not mean the water is dangerous to drink. It just means it may taste different or damage your skin, hair, and household appliances to a greater degree.

The water in Canada is also some of the highest-quality and most regulated drinking water available globally. With multiple freshwater sources around the country and 20% of the world’s surface freshwater, you can easily see why.

Thanks to the quality of drinking water found across Canada, there is no need to buy bottled water. There are multiple places across the country where you can get drinking water for free from natural springs or fountains.

Do I Need A Water Filter In Toronto?

You do not need a water filter when visiting Toronto. The city has high water quality, and Toronto tap water fluoride levels are great for your teeth.

Thanks to the constant treatment, testing, and frequent upgrading of the Toronto water system, it is considered some of the best in Canada.

However, some locals recommend using a filter, and I personally prefer to use one, too!

A filter will remove things like microplastics, viruses, and chlorine. Water filters can also make the water you drink taste a lot better.

The water filter will also be useful if you are not used to the hard water in Toronto.

There are multiple water filter options available, but if you travel a lot, I always recommend getting one that isn’t too big.

If you’re looking for an easy way to get filtered tap water on the go, the GRAYL Filtering Water Bottle is a fantastic choice.

This durable bottle filters out all the contaminants and provides you with clean, drinkable water no matter where you are in Toronto.

For a safe drink anywhere in Canada and beyond, this water bottle is a lifesaver!
