Best weekend getaway in US destination: Chicago at Navy Pier with boats tied to the pier

1. Chicago, Illinois

by Tanya of Travels and Treasures

Chicago is known for its architecture, world-class museums, diverse neighborhoods, and cuisine. Whether you want a relaxing weekend getaway by Lake Michigan or activities to explore the big city, Chicago offers everything for every traveler.

For a couples weekend, start your stay at the Intercontinental Hotel on the Magnificent Mile. You will be steps away from shopping, restaurants, and nightlife. The hotel has a gorgeous swimming pool and luxury in-room massage service. If you prefer something cozier, there are plenty of beautifully appointed Airbnbs that will fit your style.

The hotel is conveniently located in proximity to some must-see places while in Chicago.

You’ll have a 20-minute walk to Navy Pier. Enjoy a ride on the Gondola or sail a chartered boat for a romantic experience on the lake. Millennium Park is a 15-minute walk where you can enjoy the Lurie Gardens and see Cloud Gate (The Bean). And the Chicago Riverwalk is just 5 minutes away where you can experience an architectural cruise, stroll the walkway, peruse sculptures, or sip wine on a riverfront patio.

At night, dine at the top of the John Hancock or stop for cocktails in its Signature Room for spectacular views of the Windy City and Lake Michigan. Another great option is the London House which has a rooftop bar. Both are some of the best ways to see Chicago in a different light while enjoying a romantic meal.

New Orleans is one of the most unique places for a weekend getaway in the USA thanks to its vibrant music culture and party atmosphere. The Louisiana city is recognized as the home of jazz, and music is everywhere – from street buskers to jazz bars, and everything in between.

New Orleans is remarkable for its melting pot of influences from Creole, Cajun, French, Spanish, and African American cultures. It spills out onto the streets in the form of music, festivities, and of course in the city’s cuisine. The Marigny Brasserie is a favourite restaurant that blends many of these cuisines and allows you to taste some of the city’s finest dishes such as red rice and beans, gumbo, and grits.

The most famous area of New Orleans is the gorgeous French Quarter where architecture represents the French Colonial influence on the city. Here, the city’s most famous streets are located – Bourbon Street for its party vibes and Frenchmen Street for its many jazz clubs.

Staying in the French Quarter is always a great idea to be in the thick of the action and the very centrally located Wyndham New Orleans is a great mid-range option located in the thick of the action. For those looking for a quieter time, staying in a grand old mansion in the Garden District may be more of your scene.

If you’re looking for the perfect 3-day trip, Sonoma County in California is the perfect weekend getaway for any kind of traveler!
Sonoma County has a wide range of activities, but three things figure highly on any list of things to do there. First is checking out the scenic redwoods in towns like Guerneville, which is home to Armstrong Woods State Reserve. These are accessible via short or more intense hikes.
Another incredible thing to do is to check out the beaches and vistas of the Sonoma Coast. You can hike a section of the Kortum Trail by Jenner, or hike out on Bodega Head in Bodega Bay — you might even see whales migrating past as you hike!
Finally, Sonoma is known for its wine country, and you can’t go wrong nearly anywhere in Sonoma. Pinot Noir is the name of the game (though they do great Chardonnays and Zins as well). Base yourself in Sebastopol or Healdsburg and taste as much as you can (responsibly, of course)!
There’s great food everywhere in Sonoma County. In Guerneville, it’s Boon. In Sebastopol, it’s Handline and Ramen Gaijin. In Bodega Bay, it’s the Michelin-starred Terrapin Creek.
While there are plenty of great places to stay, Jenner Inn is a great spot — the views are incredible! Or, to Hitchcock it up, stay at The Inn at the Tides, which was featured in The Birds!

Although Las Vegas is famous for gambling, there’s much more to do. Check out a show by Cirque Du Soleil, watch the waterworks at the Bellagio, visit a prohibition bar, or have a relaxing spa day. Adventure lovers will want to leave The Strip to check out some of the adrenaline-rush activities offered in the area. Rock climb the red cliffs nearby, go skydiving, try out dirt bikes in the nearby desert, or take to the skies with a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon.

Take a day trip to visit the Hoover Dam and learn more about US history.

It’s impossible not to have good food in Vegas. Check out Restaurant Guy Savoy for an upscale meal, complete with a wine-paired tasting menu. Or visit eat. for the best pancakes you’ll ever consume!

Stay at the Venetian for easy access to all of Vegas’ top attractions. You’ll be so close to everything that it’s impossible not to have an amazing weekend getaway!

San Francisco golden gate bridge over the harbor at sunset

26. San Francisco, California

by Cortney of Tin Can Living

San Francisco is a romantic city. With its hills, cable cars, and Victorian architecture, it’s no wonder that many people consider it one of the most beautiful cities in America. If you’re looking to spend a few days with your partner exploring this gorgeous city, here are some highlights for a romantic weekend getaway in San Francisco.

One of the best ways to explore San Francisco is by bicycle. Rent a bike from Blazing Saddles and you’ll be able to see all sorts of interesting parts of this vibrant city. From breathtaking views of Alcatraz Island in the morning light, to a fabulous meal at one of Pier 39’s fantastic restaurant options. The Crab House won’t disappoint.

Start your second day at the Presidio, just opposite of Pier 39. You’ll be able to explore this former military base and see some amazing views of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge in the distance. Afterward, head over to Golden Gate Park for a day full of fun! Check out The Academy of Sciences or stroll around the Japanese Tea Garden.

There is no better way to end your trip than with a sweet stop at Ghirardelli Square. Explore the shops, eat some ice cream or get that last souvenir you’ve been looking for! It will be the dessert to your fabulous romantic weekend getaway.

Stay at the Hotel Kabuki by Joie De Vivre boutique hotels.

Zion National Park mountains for a weekend getaway

27. Zion National Park, Utah

by Ale of Sea Salt & Fog

Located less than a 3-hour drive from Las Vegas, Zion is a stunning national park known for epic, bucket list worthy hikes and adventures. Even if you only have a weekend to explore, you can see Zion in two or three days.

In order to enjoy this park, you’ll need to lace up your hiking boots and hit the trail. One of the most popular (and awe-inspiring) areas of Zion is The Narrows. This trail has you hiking directly on the river through the narrowest part of Zion canyon. There are areas where you’ll be surrounded by canyon walls up to a thousand feet high!

Similarly, Angel’s landing is an adrenaline-pumping hike that takes you to stunning vistas along steep red cliffs with precarious drop-offs!

For a mellower adventure, check out the Pa’rus trail – a great place to watch the sunset and spot wildlife in the park. If you’re able to snag a campsite, you need to stay in the park: you’ll be rewarded with starry skies.

Zion has easy access to restaurants and hotels in the town of Springdale. Grab breakfast at Oscar’s, and pizza at Zion Pizza & Noodles – you won’t be disappointed.

I recommend this Zion sandboarding tour
