Now known as a festival city, Stratford was first settled as a small town in 1832. Named after Stratford-upon-Avon in England, home to William Shakespeare, this small city grew into a flourishing hub for agriculture and industry.

It wasn’t until the 1950s that Stratford became an internationally recognized location for theater enthusiasts with the establishment of Tom Patterson’s world-renowned Stratford Festival.

The Stratford Festival is the largest arts festival in North America today.

You can explore the city’s history at the Stratford Perth Museum, but it is also evident in its preserved Victorian architecture.

Best Things to Do in Stratford, Ontario

1. Attend the Stratford Festival

The most popular Stratford attraction is the world-renowned Stratford Festival, which runs from April to October each year.

The flagship theater is the Festival Theatre, where some of their most popular plays have taken place, including recent hits such as Chicago. There are three other theaters as well: the Studio Theatre, the Tom Patterson Theatre, and the Avon Theatre.

Every season promises something special with a wide range of Shakespearean comedies, tragedies, musicals, and contemporary plays to suit all ages and tastes, and it produces some of the best theatrical productions you’ll see.

We went annually to see the different productions. My favourite was “The Importance of Being Earnest”.

2. Visit the Shakespearean Gardens

Located close to the Perth County Courthouse and a short walk from downtown, a visit to the Shakespearean gardens in Stratford is a must-do!

Built on the site of the former 19th-century Dufton Woollen Mill, the gardens are a tranquil place for taking a relaxing stroll along one of the trails or along the banks of the River Avon.

There are over 60 types of plants, and some are mentioned in Shakespeare’s works.

It’s a great place to visit, especially during the spring and summertime when the flowers are in full bloom.

3. The Stratford Perth Museum

The Stratford Perth Museum showcases the area’s history through interactive exhibits and fun activities.

The museum hosts special events throughout the year, such as lectures, workshops, and more.

Whether you’re looking for a quick stopover or an entire day dedicated to learning about the local history, the Stratford Perth Museum is worth a visit.

4. The Bacon and Ale Trail

The Bacon and Ale Trail is where you get to learn all about Stratford’s brewing and pork history. You can sample savory pork dishes and unique craft beers at some of the 17 local businesses.

To take part, you can buy vouchers in downtown Stratford at several locations, such as Destination Stratford, and choose which five stops to redeem your vouchers at.

5. Black Swan Brewing

This is the perfect microbrewery and taproom if you’re a craft beer lover or just want to try something new.

This downtown Stratford brewery specializes in producing handcrafted ales and lagers. With a regularly changing selection of beers, it has established itself as one of Ontario’s premier craft beer destinations.

You can sample a few beers as part of the Bacon and Ale Trail. The on-site taproom makes a great spot to relax and enjoy craft beer with friends.

6. Tom Patterson Theatre

Located in downtown Stratford, Ontario, and overlooking the Avon River, the Tom Patterson Theatre is a state-of-the-art venue known for its quality productions.

Spanning 140 years, this 19th-century Victorian-styled red-bricked structure, set in a triangle town square, is an impressive sight. It burned down in 1879 but was soon restored to its original state.

Stratford City Hall was included in the national historic sites of Canada in 1976. It’s a great spot if you’re looking for a charming venue to snap some photos.

8. Stratford Art in the Park

This event is held from May to September on Lakeside Drive, bringing together talented artists who create exceptional art pieces.

Whether you’re looking for a unique souvenir or want to browse and admire some beautiful one-of-a-kind creations, Stratford Art in the Park is definitely worth checking out.

Open every Saturday morning from 7:00 am to noon at McCarthy Road. The year-round Stratford Farmers’ Market is a great way to support local businesses while exploring the local food culture.

The market features various vendors selling everything from fresh farm produce and artisanal bread to handmade crafts, cheeses, and local art.

There are also some great food trucks if you get hungry while walking around.

11. Take a Cooking Class

The Stratford Chef’s School isn’t only for budding chefs. Every spring and summer, they hold “Open Kitchen” cooking classes where anyone can learn a whole range of cooking skills and techniques, from baking desserts to mastering an international dish.

Taking a cooking class probably isn’t one of the things you’d think of doing when visiting Stratford, but the Chef’s School has a fantastic reputation, and the classes are great fun.

Introducing one of the best things to do in Stratford, the self-guided chocolate trail. If your idea of a perfect day out is sampling chocolate and exploring the city, then you’re going to love this.

After purchasing the six coupons to participate, you have over 20 locations where you can redeem them to get your chocolate fix. If you think you need more than six coupons, you can always buy more, as it would be unfair not to try them all.

Stratford has some amazing chocolatiers.

This is where my friends and I spent all of our allowances every time we visited.

13. Rheo Thompson Candies

Rheo Thompson Candies is one of the best chocolatiers in Stratford.

Their delicious chocolates and candies are made with the best ingredients, including sustainable cocoa, ensuring you get the best-tasting treats possible.

They have 152 products, including their famous Mint Smoothies®, which are the unofficial “official” chocolate of Stratford.

14. Avon Boat Rentals

Paddle boat, canoe, kayak, or even take a river tour on the Avon River.

Renting a boat at Avon Boat Rentals is a great way to spend an afternoon. From gorgeous river views to spotting Canada Geese and riverside wildlife, you’ll have a relaxing time just getting away from it all.

After you’ve worked up an appetite, grab a sandwich or wrap at The Boathouse Patio and take in the scenery for a while.

15. Visit Alley Cat Cafe

This charming cafe is the perfect spot to grab a cup of coffee. And for just a small fee, you get to enjoy tea or coffee, a homemade treat, and a cuddle with rescued cats.

All of the cats are adoptable!

I don’t think my dog Theo would be too happy if I brought a cat home. Even if you’re not looking to adopt one, you’re still supporting a great cause just by visiting them.

22. Go on a Ghost Tour

What better way to experience the city’s spooky history than with a ghost tour?

Throughout your time on the tour, you will learn about the city’s paranormal activity and visit various locations that are said to be haunted, such as the graveyard at St. James Anglican Church and the Perth County Courthouse.

The ghost walk is run by actors from the Playmakers Theatre School, and they do such a great job of getting into character that you’ll love every spine-tingling second of it.

23. Spring Swan Parade

Every year, the whole town turns out for the swan parade, which usually takes place on the first Sunday in April.

People line up along the riverbanks to watch the 25 or so beautiful swans migrate back from their nearby wintering grounds.

Stratford police line the way, playing pipes and drums, which the swans follow down to the water.

This is a well-known event in Stratford that signifies that spring has arrived, and if you’re visiting around this time, you won’t want to miss it..
