The Blue Ridge Parkway is truly one of the best places to visit in October in the USA! It is one of the most visited places in the country, and October is peak leaf peeping time for seeing gorgeous fall foliage!
It is important to know that the Blue Ridge Parkway spans both Virginia and North Carolina and goes through the Blue Ridge and Appalachian mountain ranges.
The best part about driving the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, is that it passes many popular towns and cities, so you can make those your home base, and explore the Blue Ridge Parkway at your leisure.
The first few weeks of October are best for taking a Blue Ridge Parkway Road Trip, but keep an eye on the fall foliage calendars to make sure you are planning to visit at the right time.
One of the best stops is Beacon Heights Overlook at it is an elevation of 4000 feet. It has sweeping views of the valley below and in fall, you really get to enjoy the colors that the fall foliage has to offer.
Of course, the Blue Ridge Parkway offers tons of hiking, cute small towns, and waterfalls to enjoy and October is a great time because you can blend the outdoors and nature with fall festivals in the towns that you pass by!

Fall in Colorado is a real treat!
One of the best ways to fully soak up the autumn colors that make the Centennial State a must-visit in October is by visiting Rocky Mountain National Park.
To start exploring, grab your car keys and hit the alluring Trail Ridge Road, which is a 48 miles long drive that’s dotted with bright yellow hues of aspens.
Another incredible way to experience the beauty of Rocky Mountain in fall is by going on a few hikes.
For a short and easy trail, the Emerald Lake hike offers some of the best views in the park. You’ll see three alpine lakes along the way, and you’ll be surrounded by colorful aspens pretty much every step of the way.
Another reason to go on a hike is that the chances of you stumbling across a few elk are high. Spotting a wild elk is a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Every October, Estes Park celebrates the elks’ mating season by hosting the yearly Elk Festival, where you can learn all about these amazing animals who call the Rocky Mountains their home. Aside from the insane amount of educational activities, you can also enjoy local native American storytelling, live music, beer gardens, and more!
Where to Stay

3. Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada
Recommended by Christina of Travel2Next
Lake Tahoe is a region that straddles two states, California and Nevada, centred around a large alpine lake of the same name. The area has spectacular views of the Sierra Nevada’s and a sub-alpine climate, making it the perfect spot for an outdoorsy getaway.
The peak season in Lake Tahoe is summer and winter, but the best time to visit is in the fall when the atmosphere is more relaxed and fewer people.
October in Lake Tahoe has beautiful fall colors when the deciduous trees are a stunning orange, yellow, and red palette. When the leaves of the Cottonwood trees begin to turn from green to gold, you know autumn has arrived.
Hiking is the best way to do leaf-peeping, and Lake Tahoe is a beautiful place to explore nature. It has over 100 miles of shoreline, making for some great hiking trails. The hikes around Fallen Leaf Lake on the south shore has lovely fall colors and views of one of Tahoe’s highest peaks, Mt. Tallac.
If hiking doesn’t appeal, gaze in any direction, and you’re sure to see breathtaking sights from your car window or the deck of your vacation rental.
Other popular things to do in Lake Tahoe in the fall are yoga, biking, and horseback riding.
The weather cools down in October, and it’s cool enough to sit around a fire. The average high temperature drops to about 62 degrees F, while the average low is around 38 degrees F.

4. Acadia National Park, Maine
Recommended by Mark and Kristen of Where Are Those Morgans?
Acadia is one of the most popular national parks in the US and for good reason. A varied and diverse selection of hikes from family friendly to adrenaline pumping, scenic lakes and beaches, the famous Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse and endless photography opportunities create the perfect adventure playground for over three million tourists each year.
Summer is naturally a busy time in the park but October is arguably the best month of the year to visit Acadia. Spectacular and dazzling autumnal colors illuminate rolling hills throughout the park. A blanket of burnt oranges, fiery reds, golden yellows and emerald greens are only interrupted by picturesque lakes, islands and the Atlantic Ocean.
October brings cooler temperatures for hiking Acadia’s short but sweet hikes with stellar 360 degree panoramic views. Sunrises are later in the morning and sunsets are earlier in the evening, plus the Milky Way glows brightly in the dark night sky not long after sunset this late in the year.
But it is those classic New England Fall foliage colors that make Acadia so extremely sought after in October, particularly the first two weeks in which peak foliage season is common.
The best way to soak up gorgeous Autumnal colors in Acadia is to get lost in its maze of carriage roads on foot or on bike.
Where to Stay
If money is no object, stay at the luxurious Balance Rock Inn in glitzy Bar Harbor. Be sure to book your Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park hotels as far in advance as possible if visiting during peak Fall season.

5. The Eastern Sierras of California
Recommended by Carol Guttery of California Crossings
At an initial glance, California’s Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains don’t look particularly leafy. This is the dry side of the Sierras, where the craggy cliffs, pine forest and canyons fall away toward the east, eroding into the Mojave desert.
And yet, this region is one of the best places for fall color in the Western United States.
There are lovely alpine lakes and steep canyons along the Highway 395 corridor creating a watershed that feeds aspen, willows and cottonwood trees. Starting in late September, the creeks and hidden canyons explode with fall color in the Eastern Sierras.
And because the elevation in the area ranges from 4,100-9,600 feet, you’ll get a nice long leaf peeping season. The season usually starts in late September and goes into late October.
The best fall color spots are in the 105-mile range between Bridgeport California and Bishop California.
Some of the high elevation hotspots include: Virginia Lakes, Rock Creek Canyon and Lobdell Lake. For lower elevation options check out Convict Lake, Mammoth Lakes and the June Lake Loop.
And if the turning leaves aren’t enough of a lure, you can also check out the region’s many hot springs, ghost towns, fishing and hiking.
Where to Stay
The Westin Monache Resort is a stunning retreat.

6. Laurel Highlands, Pennsylvania
Recommended by Amanda of Toddling Traveler
If you’re looking for fall foliage, scenic hikes and the best fall festivals, Laurel Highlands in Pennsylvania is the perfect place to visit in October.
Known for having some of the best leaf peeping in the US, this beautiful part of Pennsylvania is filled with fall colors in October. The fall foliage along the highway and location in Western PA make it the perfect fall road trip destination.
If you like the outdoors, you can also enjoy the fall leaves at one of several state parks including Laurel Mountain, Laurel Hill and Ohiopyle State Parks.
Laurel Highlands is also packed with fall festivals for all ages and interests. They include Autumnfest at Seven Springs, Delmont Apple Fest and several pumpkin patches and festivals throughout the three counties that make up Laurel Highlands.

Fort Ligonier days also take place in October, which is another fall festival centered around the history and events at Fort Ligonier.
Lastly, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater is extra special in the fall against the changing leaves and shouldn’t be missed on your Laurel Highlands trip in the fall.

7. Zion National Park, Utah
Recommended by Kate of She Dreams of Alpine
For an amazing outdoor adventure in October, head to Zion National Park in Utah!
While the desert canyons of Zion are incredible any time of year, the cooler temperatures of fall allow you to explore more and see some stunning fall colors.
An absolute must-do is the Angels Landing hike, which is the most iconic trail in Zion.
Angels Landing is a super strenuous hike, with some mental toughness required for the narrow and exposed section at the top (where you will find chains to help you keep your balance). The breath-taking views are worth the exertion and the butterflies you might get in your stomach if you’re afraid of heights.
And in October, you won’t have to worry about overheating on this hike, which is a serious concern in the heat of the summer.
If you want to expand your adventures beyond hiking, you can try canyoneering in Zion!
Exploring The Narrows, a beautiful slot canyon, is a unique experience in Zion. Permits are required and can be hard to get, but you might have better luck in late October as the summer crowds thin out.
Add a visit to Zion into your October Utah national parks road trip for an epic autumn adventure.
Where to Stay
To rest after your adventures, you can spend your nights under the stars and camp in Zion Canyon at either the South or Watchman Campground, or you can treat yourself to a comfy bed and stay at the Zion Lodge right in the park.

10. Mount Rainier National Park, Washington State
Recommended by Jessica of Uprooted Traveler
While plenty of destinations have gorgeous fall foliage, some parts of the Pacific Northwest, like Mount Rainier National Park, provide a unique aspect of autumnal colors – not only do the leaves of its towering trees turn vibrant colors, but also the succulents, wildflowers and shrubs carpeting its rolling valleys.
While the colors’ peak varies from year to year, your best bet for seeing some dazzling autumnal colors is to arrive in the park in the first couple of weeks of October.
Once you’re there, the best way to experience the fall foliage is to lace up your hiking boots and hit some of the park’s epic trails.
A couple of great trail options include the Skyline Trail, a moderate to challenging 5.5 mile hike that leads you up-close and personal with Rainier and through rolling subalpine meadows ablaze with beautiful colors .
Alternatively, check out the easier Naches Peak Loop Trail, a portion of the famed Pacific Crest Trail, that will lead you through colorful valleys, as the eponymous snow-capped mountain looms overhead.
Be sure to keep a lookout for huckleberry bushes on the latter hike if you’re in the mood for a mid-trail snack – there’s plentiful berries here from late summer through early fall.
If you’re, instead, looking for a more relaxing way to enjoy Rainier’s fall colors, check out the Chinook Scenic Byway, a spectacular drive, snaking 107-miles through the national park and Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, providing you with non-stop views of waterfalls, snow-capped mountains, and some of the best autumnal colors the Cascade Mountains have to offer.
Where to Stay
If you’re looking for a place to stay near Rainier, consider Stormking Cabins and Spa, a bougie resort offering private hot tubs, roaring fireplaces, and a spa.

11. Washington, DC
Recommended by Terri of Female Solo Trek
Washington DC is beautiful in any season due to its expansive National Mall and the impressive national monuments and memorials.
But in October, most locals as well as visitors want to enjoy the brilliant fall foliage.
The best place to head is Rock Creek Park which runs through the northwest corridor of Washington DC. A favorite destination for President Theodore Roosevelt during his years in office, this historic park is located within the city’s borders.
It was authorized in 1890 which makes it the third oldest national park in America.
The 1,754-acre national park turns brilliant shades of gold, red, orange and yellow in October as the trees put on their autumn finery.
Since the changing of the leaves depends on the summer weather patterns, it is difficult to say the exact time to visit.
Rock Creek Park offers many fall diversions including horseback riding. (It is the only stables located in Washington DC). What an amazing way to see a huge swath of the park’s forested areas in the autumn!
Besides a leisurely walk or fast paced run, visitors can enjoy bicycling, rock climbing and birding.
Nature lovers will love exploring the wildflowers and native plants on the trails. The majority of trees are deciduous, so they turn color before they shed their leaves.
Visitors can also learn about the city’s history by visiting Civil War fortifications and working mills located inside the park.
An autumn picnic is a favorite activity whether at a picnic grove or historic Boulder Bridge.
Where to Stay:
The best place to stay is near an entrance to Rock Creek Park such as Omni Shoreham Hotel off Connecticut Avenue. The hotel is an easy walk to the trails as well as the Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan neighborhoods.

Recommended by Lina of Bucket List Places
Boston is both a historic and hip city located on the coast of Massachusetts, perfect for a family getaway, friends trip or a romantic couple’s weekend.
A visit to Boston is worthwhile at any time of year, but is especially magical in the fall.

Recommended by Dymphe of Dym Abroad
Los Angeles is one of the best places to visit in October in the United States.
This west coast city is always great to visit, but during October it can be even more fun to visit the city.
One of these reasons is that the weather is very pleasant during this month. The average temperature during October is about 79°F, and on average it only rains for 1 day of the month.
Compared to many other cities in the United States, this is much more comfortable autumn temperature.
Halloween takes place in October and there are many Halloween events in LA. One of these is the 2021 Downtown Los Angeles Halloween Club Crawl.
During this event, you visit several clubs in one night.
Another great event in LA during October is the Rise Festival. This is a lovely event where every attendee gets two lanterns. During the event, these lanterns will go up in the air, which will look incredible!
This event takes place on October 1st and 2nd.
Besides that, because the weather is still great, you can visit some of the most Instagrammable places in LA and take great photos! Your photos will look amazing for sure.

Best October Vacations in The USA for Festivals

17. Leavenworth, Washington
Recommended by Britt of Britt’s Bella Vita
Leavenworth, Washington is a Bavarian-themed town in Central Washington that attracts a large number of visitors during the fall season.
Although Leavenworth today is a prominent tourist destination, it wasn’t always that way; the decision to transform it into a fully Bavarian-themed village was the final attempt to attract visitors to the town.
This investment paid off because today they host one of the most prominent Oktoberfest festivals in the United States. It is a popular destination to visit in October with visitors coming from all around the world.
The Oktoberfest event takes place almost every weekend in October, with typical German cuisine and celebrations flooding the downtown streets.
The best way to get to this mountain town is to fly into Seattle and drive the two hours there. You’ll have plenty of options to stop at small farm stands and view fall foliage along the route in October.
You must make a pit stop at Lake Wenatchee on your way into town for spectacular fall colors and to stretch your legs by hiking around the lake.
There are so many things to do in Leavenworth during the fall season such as wine tasting, hiking, water rafting and so much more for travel enthusiasts!
Where to Stay
You’ll want to stay close to downtown once you arrive in Leavenworth and I suggest the Posthotel for its luxury rooms and convenience to town.
The Posthotel is only a few steps from Waterfront Park and the Wenatchee River’s hiking paths, which are fantastic in October for fall colors!

18. Roanoke, Virginia
Recommended by Erin Gifford from Go Hike Virginia
Situated in Southwest Virginia, Roanoke shines as a destination of choice for outdoor enthusiasts, especially in the fall.
Start with a drive along the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway, which skirts to the east of downtown.
In October, dramatic bursts of golden yellow, fiery orange and persimmon stun visitors along this scenic byway, just in time for the annual Anthem Go Outside Festival that takes place in Roanoke each year (in 2021, October 15-17).
Stop in the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center at milepost 115 to explore topographical maps, and browse souvenirs and regional crafts in the gift shop. Here you’ll also find Explore Park, a 1,100-acre recreation area with hiking and biking trails, disc golf, camping, kayaking and tubing on the Roanoke River.
Settle in at Twin Creeks Brewpub for a pint or a bite from their full menu.
As America’s East Coast Mountain Biking Capital, it’s a must to ride across nearly 60 foliage-filled miles of mountain bike trails at Carvins Cove Natural Reserve.
Hikers, get ready to tackle the Roanoke Star hike to the world’s largest man-made star that stands 100 feet tall. The overlook wows with spectacularly colorful views across the Roanoke Valley.

19. Hudson Valley, New York
Recommended by James Ian from Travel Collecting
The Hudson Valley stretches from New York City north to Albany, the state capital of New York, on either side of the Hudson River. The large valley is filled with farms, fields and forests.
October is the absolute best time to visit, as the entire area is one of the best places to see fall foliage in the United States. Because of its north-south orientation and because there are hills in and next to the valley, there is peak foliage throughout the entire month.
There are great hikes in the valley and the neighboring Catskill Mountains.
Popular places for fall hikes are Minnewaska State Park, where there are stunning overlooks with views of bright red, orange and yellow forests, and Mohonk Preserve, for more spectacular scenery.
The area is also a center for agritourism, and there are plenty of farms where you can pick your own apples and pears, get lost in a corn maze, take a hayride, or find the perfect pumpkin for Halloween in a pumpkin patch. Jenkins Leukins Orchards is a popular choice.
The fall also sees harvest season, so it’s a great time to tour the wineries and cider houses. Visit Twin Star Orchards for fresh cider and wood-stove pizza next to an apple orchard.
The Hudson Valley is also a Halloween hotspot.
Don’t miss the spectacular Great Pumpkin Blaze where over 7,000 hand-carved pumpkins are arranged in elaborate tableaux. And in Ulster Park, you can visit an entire haunted village at Headless Horseman Hayrides and Haunted Houses.
There is no end to festive fun in the Hudson Valley in October!

20. San Francisco, California
Recommended by Alice from Adventures of Alice
San Francisco during the autumn months is a very special place. The leaves are just turning and the skies are a beautiful soft blue that can be matched by a clear summer’s day in the late afternoon.
It is most often warm enough for a T-shirt during the day but cool enough during the evening to throw on a jacket.
During October it is fairly different from the peak September temperatures, making it a great time of the year to do activities such as walking or hiking without feeling too overheated.
To really experience the typical fall beauty such as the crisp orange and brown leaves, try one of the hiking trails such as the “Ecology Trail” which is a 1.4-mile trail that takes you to a Bay-view look-out where you can experience some stunning views.
If you decide to travel during late October, you can also attend a festival called “outside lands” which is a music and arts festival featuring many popular music artists.
You could also plan a road trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles California by driving along the California Pacific Coast Highway which is said to be one of the best road trips of all time.

21. Sleepy Hollow, New York
Recommended by Bernadette of Explorer Chick
Fans of Halloween are familiar with Sleepy Hollow and the spooky story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving. The book is set in the colonial-era town of Sleepy Hollow in New York.
The Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and the Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow offer tours to see the places that inspired Irving to create the scary tale.
To get the whole experience, stop at the Headless Horseman Bridge, where the Headless Horseman caught Ichabod Crane.
It is not the exact bridge but it is similar to the wooden bridge that crosses the Pocantico River in the story.
As it is the Northeast, visitors can admire the changing of the leaves and the gorgeous fall colors all around the area.
There is plenty of hiking to be done as well as visit the Rockefeller family’s Kykuit Estate and other colonial-era landmarks.
The town gets into all the Halloween festivities with hayrides, parades, and all sorts of festivals. The most notable of which is the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze where thousands of pumpkins are carved and lit up every night. The outdoor display is set in the Van Cortlandt Mansion and visitors walk along the grounds and the banks of the Croton River.
The pumpkin displays run from simple jack-o-lanterns placed in a field to a bridge lined top to bottom with pumpkins to life-sized dinosaurs, all made by local artists.
Hundreds of volunteers arrive each night to light up the lanterns. It takes about an hour to see all of the larger-than-life displays.
A trip to Sleepy Hollow can easily be a day trip or a quick weekend getaway.
Where to Stay
The Castle Hotel & Spa can be a great home base to explore the area.

As the fifth-largest city in the US, Phoenix is a great place to visit. It’s located in a valley and there are mountains all over, both around and in the city.
Enjoy the many mountain parks with hiking trails ranging from easy to difficult. There’s something for everyone!
For a real treat, head a couple of hours north to the red rock haven of Sedona. You can hike among the many striking red-rock buttes to enjoy a very different area in a higher-elevation desert. Or, wander along the bubbling Oak Creek for a peaceful and shady spot.
Phoenix offers a lot more than just hiking in October.
Check out the Desert Botanical Garden or Boyce Arboretum to appreciate the colors of the desert. You’ll fall in love with this area!
Or, enjoy the many restaurants that open up for al fresco dining during the cooler months. It’s a foodie paradise!
Where to Stay
One of the best areas to stay in is downtown Phoenix. It’s convenient for getting around the city and there are a lot of great things to do right in the area.
Found:RE is a fun upscale boutique, Arizona Biltmore is a great splurge, or the Clarendon Hotel is a historic and moderately-priced place to stay.

24. Ten Thousand Islands, Florida
Recommended by Paula of Paula Pins the Planet
The ecological sanctuary of Ten Thousand Islands Wildlife Refuge is located in Southwest Florida and it is the second-largest mangrove forest in the world. The mangroves form fascinating labyrinths of water and islands with very rich wildlife, including some endangered species.
The best time to visit the Ten Thousand Islands is during the dry season, and the best month to visit the park is in October. I
t is a great destination to visit during fall because it is when the temperature and the humidity levels are lower, the mosquitoes are not around, and hurricane season has passed. It has an average temperature ranging between 78.4°F (25.8°C) and min 59.7°F (15.4°C) during the fall.
It is also the best time to see the local wildlife. This is the time that manatees migrate to the Ten Thousand Islands area. The water levels drop during the dry season and a large number of animals congregate around the water holes, making wildlife viewing an easy endeavour.
Other very popular activities are to take a boat tour or rent a kayak to visit some of the islands to observe the wildlife, including dolphins.
Take a drive on the Loop Road to observe the unique landscape of the Everglades, visiting the charming fishing village of Everglades City, and also go camping in one of the designated islands.
Where to Stay
If you plan to visit the Ten Thousand Island, a great accommodation option is the Ivey House Everglades Adventures Hotel located in Everglade City.

25. The Everglades National Park, Florida
Recommended by Victoria of Guide Your Travel
The Everglades National Park, located in southern Florida, is a magnificent place to visit in October.
Flying to Miami International Airport is the most convenient way to get to the park and you can easily drive there in less than an hour from the city.
October marks the shoulder season in Florida which means it’ll be a lot less expensive and less crowded, but you’ll still be able to catch some good weather days. Temperatures will reach 75 degrees, which is far cooler than the scorching summers.
There will be far fewer other tourists, which means more opportunities to appreciate the Everglades’ natural beauty in serenity.
The Everglades are all about getting out in nature and getting some fresh air. Hiking, camping, and wildlife observation are all popular activities in this area.
The popular Bobcat Boardwalk is an easy and accessible pathway that is just under a kilometre long and suitable for all types of walkers. There are, of course, longer and more demanding hikes available as well if you’re an experienced hiker.
A boat trip through the Everglades is a must-do experience. This is an amazing way to see the park from the water, with its beautiful mangrove forests and rivers. Tours are provided by kayak or airboat, though kayaking is often calmer and more environmentally friendly.
Where to Stay
You can camp in the park or drive 48km to the stunning Sunset Inn for a more luxurious overnight experience.
Car Rentals
Turn this guide into an October road trip. To do that, you’ll need to rent a car.
You’ll have more freedom by renting a car to explore more hiking trails and attractions around the USA that feature the fall colours.
I recommend using Discover Cars to quickly compare rental options.
Their comparison tool does the homework for you, so there’s no need to have up 10+ tabs trying to figure out which company is the most affordable. Actually, you can save up to 70% using their tool!
