When I go abroad and people find out I’m Canadian, they ask “is Canada in America?” This often happens after I tell people I’m not American.

There’s a common misconception that Canada and the US are basically the same. We’re not! There are so many differences.

However, Europeans especially seem to refer to all of North America as just “America” which can be confusing.

So let me break down the differences so you don’t accidentally offend a Canadian or get your geography mixed up again!

Is Canada in America?

No, Canada is not in America (as in the United States of America). But Canada is a part of North America, along with the USA and Mexico.

Canada is north of the mainland US states, with Mexico to the south of the mainland US states.

Foreigners sometimes refer to North America as “America”, but this is incorrect and Canadians will call you out on it. We don’t really like being mixed up with Americans – so remember to add the “North”!
