These Were the Most Popular Travel Destinations in 2023, According to Google Trends

When I think about going on a trip, the first thing I do is hit up Google to figure out where to go, what to do, and how to get there.

I’m not alone! With billions of searches every day, we’re all looking for our next vacation spot. Those searches tell us a lot about where people most want to go.

Every year Google releases their “Year in Search” data, but it always misses the thing I care most about: what are the most popular destinations of the year. Who cares which actor people searched the most? Not me!

But I do care about the coolest travel destinations.

So I found a way to get that data.

I used Google’s Destinations Insights tool to see what was trending in travel this year.

I looked at searches from the U.S., focusing on searches from January to December. This way, I could really get what spots are on everyone’s radar, not just where people are flying for business or to visit family.

Or the random places people searched trying to find that missing Titanic submarine.

I know these searches don’t mean everyone booked to go to these places, but it definitely tells us where people wanted to go. And it’s more likely that these places got the most visitors this year, even if only 10% of these searchers actually booked trips.

So let’s check out the top 10 destinations of 2023 in this Google Wrapped round up.

10. Jamaica

As the rhythms of reggae and the tantalizing aroma of jerk chicken call, Jamaica remains a top choice for travelers seeking a blend of relaxation and vibrant culture.

I’d literally fly back to Jamaica just to go to the jerk hut I visited last time I was there. It’s delicious!

But Jamaica is more than chicken. It’s got stunning beaches, comfortable resorts, and this infectious energy that leaves you rejuvenated after you visit.

While the allure of lounging on the sun-kissed sands of Negril or Montego Bay is undeniable, Jamaica offers plenty experiences beyond the beach.

Venture into the heart of the island to discover the Blue Mountains, famous for their coffee and breathtaking views. Kingston, the capital, pulses with music and art, offering a glimpse into the island’s soul.

Jamaica’s smaller towns and villages, like Port Antonio, provide a more laid-back, authentic experience. Here, you can connect with local life, savoring the flavors and rhythms that make Jamaica unique.

So, while the beach might call your name, remember that the real spirit of Jamaica lies just beyond the shore, waiting to be explored.

From the vibrant streets of Barcelona to the sun-soaked beaches of the Costa del Sol, Spain has long been a favorite destination for travelers seeking a mix of adventure and relaxation. And this year was no different!

With its rich history, charming cities, and delicious cuisine, it’s no wonder that Spain continues to hold its place as one of the top destinations in the world.

Stroll through the winding streets of Madrid, marvel at the iconic architecture in Seville, or sip on a glass of Rioja wine as you take in the beauty of Barcelona.

But Spain isn’t just about city life.

Make your way to the southern coast and discover a world of picturesque beaches and charming seaside towns.

Or head up north to explore the rugged landscapes and quaint villages of Basque Country. Or into the mountains of Andalucia where I worked for a time.

No matter where you go in Spain, one thing is for sure – the country’s vibrant energy and warm hospitality will leave a lasting impression on you. So why not plan your next adventure to this enchanting land?

It’s easily one of the most talked about and bucket list-ed destinations in the world, so it’s no surprise it’s on this list.

7. Italy

Italy is synonymous with art, history, and delicious food. This Mediterranean country boasts stunning landscapes, from the rolling hills of Tuscany to the picturesque Amalfi Coast.

But don’t just stick to the popular tourist destinations – there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered in Italy!

I lived in a tiny town called Atri and the nearby beach town Pescara offered some of the best vistas and gelato in the whole country!

Explore the ancient ruins of Pompeii or hike up Mount Vesuvius for a breathtaking view. Take a gondola ride through the canals of Venice or visit the charming villages of Cinque Terre. And, of course, no trip to Italy is complete without indulging in some pizza.

With its rich culture and stunning scenery, it’s easy to see why Italy is a top destination for travelers from around the world.

Italy will always be in my top 3 countries as it’s the first place I ever lived abroad. And it’s the most dog friendly and celiac friendly spot in Europe – so it’s my trifecta!

6. Dominican Republic

Located in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic is a tropical paradise that offers something for everyone. Whether you want to relax on the beach, explore colonial cities, or go on an adventure in the rainforest, this country has it all.

One of the top attractions in the Dominican Republic is its stunning beaches, with crystal clear waters and white sand. But there’s more to this country than just its beaches. Visit the capital city of Santo Domingo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with historic buildings and charming cobblestone streets.

For outdoor enthusiasts, there are plenty of opportunities for hiking, zip lining, and water sports. And don’t forget to try some delicious Dominican cuisine, including fresh seafood and tropical fruits.

5. India

India is a country filled with vibrant colors, bustling cities, and rich culture. From the iconic Taj Mahal to the chaotic streets of Mumbai, there’s no shortage of things to see and experience in this diverse country.

Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, meaning American citizens can visit without a passport or visa and use U.S. dollars. This makes it an easy destination for Americans looking for a tropical getaway without having to worry about currency exchange or travel documents.

However, most Americans consider it another country – which is probably how it ended up on this top 10 search list, surprising me.

One of the top attractions in Puerto Rico is the bioluminescent bay in Vieques, where visitors can kayak under a canopy of stars and witness the glowing blue waters produced by tiny microorganisms. The island also offers a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, surfing, and snorkeling.

But Puerto Rico isn’t just about beautiful scenery – it’s also rich in culture and history. With influences from Spanish, African, and indigenous Taino cultures, the island has a unique blend of traditions and cuisines.

Visitors can explore historic landmarks such as the San Felipe del Morro fortress in Old San Juan or sample traditional dishes like mofongo and arroz con gandules.

3. Canada

Known for its stunning natural landscapes, friendly locals, and diverse cities, Canada is a must-visit for any traveler. From the rugged coastlines of Nova Scotia to the majestic Rocky Mountains in Alberta, Canada offers endless opportunities for outdoor adventures.

Cities like Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver offer a mix of modern skyscrapers and historic architecture, as well as an array of cultural experiences such as museums, art galleries, and festivals.

And of course, no trip to Canada would be complete without trying some poutine – a beloved Canadian dish made with French fries, cheese curds, and gravy. It’s one of my favourites!

But Canada’s beauty and charm extend beyond its physical features. With a population known for their kindness and welcoming nature, visitors will feel at home in this diverse country. And with two official languages – English and French – it’s the perfect place to practice your language skills. And to pick up some fun slang.

Obviously I’m a bit biased, but I think Canada should be higher up on this list. It’s kind of a hidden gem for Americans who mostly mock us on TV and ignore the natural beauty we have.

2. United Kingdom

From bustling cities like London and Manchester to quaint villages in the countryside, the United Kingdom is a charming destination. Steeped in history, visitors can explore ancient sites like Stonehenge or tour iconic landmarks such as Buckingham Palace.

But the UK isn’t just about its storied past – it also offers a modern and vibrant culture. With world-renowned museums, theaters, and music venues, there’s always something to see and do.

And don’t forget to try some traditional British dishes like fish and chips or a hearty Sunday roast.

Despite its small size, the UK is home to four distinct countries – England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland – each with their own unique customs and traditions. This means that no matter where you go in the UK, you’ll always find something new and exciting to experience.

I really recommend a visit to the Cotswolds if you haven’t been yet.

1. Mexico

With its vibrant culture, stunning beaches, and delicious cuisine, Mexico is a top destination for travelers.

From the bustling streets of Mexico City to the laid-back beach towns of Tulum and Cancun, there’s something for everyone in this diverse country.

But Mexico isn’t just about relaxing on the beach – it also has a rich history and cultural heritage. Explore ancient ruins like Chichen Itza or Teotihuacan, and learn about the fascinating civilizations that once called Mexico home. And don’t forget to try some of the local specialties, like tacos, tamales, and mole.

Mexico is also known for its lively festivals and celebrations, such as Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and Cinco de Mayo. These events are not only a great way to learn about Mexican culture, but also a chance to join in on the fun and festivities.

This is the only destination on this list that I actually made it to this year! (Well, Canada, but I live there.)
