1. Sandbanks Provincial Park

Sandbanks Provincial Park is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Prince Edward County.

With its beautiful sandy beaches, dunes, and clear blue waters, the park is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking.

If you’re feeling adventurous, there are also plenty of hiking and biking trails to explore.

People come from across Ontario for this amazing park and its adventures.

The hikes are NOT dog friendly – so leave your furry pet at home.

When I visited, I found the trails very easy and pretty short. Most people go for the beach rather than the trails.

Reserve your parking pass 5 days ahead of time to ensure they have spots for you.

Learn to camp in Sandbanks!

2. Macaulay Heritage Park

Macaulay Heritage Park is a must-see for history buffs and nature lovers alike.

The park offers visitors a chance to learn about the area’s rich history, as well as its diverse ecosystem.

There are plenty of walking trails to explore, as well as a beautiful lake where you can go for a swim.

This was my favourite spot to hike when I visited Prince Edward County.

It’s dog friendly, but your dogs must be kept on-leash.

A bonus attraction: The Macaulay Heritage Park is next to a bird house city!

It’s really cute – if a little bit creepy.

The birdhouses began with a single birdhouse built to represent an iconic building in town. Now, all of Picton’s iconic spaces are represented in miniature for the birds of PEC to enjoy.

3. Ameliasburgh Heritage Village

Ameliasburgh Heritage Village is a living history museum that offers visitors a chance to step back in time and experience what life was like in the 19th century.

The village has over 20 historic buildings, including a blacksmith shop, a schoolhouse, and a church.

There are also plenty of beautiful gardens to explore.

I grew up going to Black Creek Village in Toronto, and this vividly reminded me of my childhood!

4. Massassauga Point Conservation Area

Massassauga Point Conservation Area is a nature lover’s paradise.

The conservation area is home to over 10 different ecosystems, including forests, wetlands, and meadows.

5. Glenora Ferry

Glenora Ferry is one of the best ways to experience Prince Edward County.

lake on the mountain ontario

6. Lake on the Mountain

Mysteries abound at this truly magic location!

Located about 60m above Lake Ontario is a lake literally on top of a mountain – with no clear water source! (And it’s not just collecting rain water. It has a continual source of fresh water that no scientist has been able to figure out).

The area is sacred to the Mohawk Indigenous Peoples, who call it the “Lake of the Gods”.

I’d say it’s pretty accurate!

The trail around this lake is very short, so it’s not a place to spend your whole day (which I’d thought it was).

But the cute restaurants beside the Lake will help prolong your time.

If you have a kayak or paddleboard, you can toss it in the water and head off on an adventure!

No reservations are required to visit, just pay for parking when you arrive. It’s dog friendly if your dog is on-leash.

🚣‍♀️ I recommend this inflatable kayak

It’s the perfect summer activity, and is VERY popular for a girls’ getaway.

sandbanks beach prince edward county

Sandbanks Provincial Park is a must-visit, and it’s just a short drive from Picton. The park has several beaches, as well as hiking trails and picnic areas.

This beach requires a reservation 5 days in advance. And honestly, it’s very popular so it’s a bit overcrowded for my tastes.

wellington beaxch prince edward county

Another great spot is Wellington Beach, which is located in the town of Wellington. The beach has a playground and a swimming area, and it’s a great place to relax on a summer day.

Theo and I spent a lovely morning here on the sandy beach. There is a rocky inlet before you hit the water, but there is soft sand once you’re in the lake.

There’s no tree cover so be sure to bring an umbrella or tent!

I also recommend checking out North Beach Provincial Park, which is a little bit more secluded and less crowded than the other beaches in the area.

It’s easy to book two days in advance, and is equally as sandy as Sandbanks’ dune beach.

And if you’re looking for a beach that’s dog-friendly, head to Outlet Beach.

And Dunes Day Beach is gorgeous for a sunset stroll.

100% YES! โ€” Canada has “free” healthcare but it’s only for citizens! Foreigners visiting need travel insurance in case anything happens on their visit. I recommend World Nomads – starting at just $5 a day!

💧Can you drink the water in Canada?

Yes โ€” In all major cities in Canada, you can drink the tap water. There are very few, rural areas that you can’t. However, you should never drink river or lake water anywhere in the country! I recommend a Brita Water Bottle for long hikes and backcountry camping to stay safe and hydrated.

📲 Will my phone work in Canada?

Maybe โ€” Some American companies work in Canada, but many will not. If your phone doesn’t work in Canada, I recommend getting a Canadian SIM card so you can get around and stay in contact with loved ones. We don’t have a lot of free WIFI in Canada, so you’ll need your phone for maps.

🏩 Whatโ€™s the best way to book my Canada accommodations?

My go-to for Canadian hotels is Booking.com. For hostels, I use Hostel World. If you want a home-y feeling, check out VRBO (which is cheaper and safer than Airbnb).

Or get free accommodations with Trusted Housesitters!

✈️ Whatโ€™s the best site to buy Canada flights?

For finding cheap Canadian flights, I recommend Skyscanner.

🎫 Do I need a visa for Canada?

Likely Not โ€” US, UK, and EU passport holders don’t need Canadian visas. However, some other countries do (check here!). And if you plan to stay for more than 4 weeks (an average tourist visa length), you will need to look into visas to live in Canada.
